“Five years from now you’ll be the same person you are today
except for the books you read and the people you meet”
– Charlie “Tremendous” Jones
I’ve read a LOT of personal development books over the years, since I’m always working to improve myself, and striving to become the best person I know I’m capable of becoming. However, it takes a lot more than just reading books and attending seminars and conferences. Sooner or later you have to actually put the book down, or switch off the iPod and take action. Aah- scary- it’s easier said than done!
I recently discovered a hot new concept- get a personal development buddy! (Why didn’t I think of this sooner?!) They needn’t be a professional, highly paid success coach (although those people are awesome too xox) You just need a friend who wants to study the same material, and implement the suggested strategies at the same time you do. Then meet up regularly to discuss, support, and motivate each other.
Step 1: Find a personal development book or program you’d both like to study. (At the moment my buddy and I are reading “Quantum Success” by Sandra Anne Taylor).
Step 2: Find a friend at a similar level as you who you can study the material and apply the strategies with.
Step3: Make a regular appointment to read the book and apply the principles together. Take action. Set goals and hold each other accountable. Create homework tasks. Talk about your experiences- what worked, what didn’t, and more importantly- what you learned.
Step 4: Keep a journal!
Step 5: Celebrate each other’s victories together, as an incentive to keep going.
Tip: If your buddy lives too far away, try chatting for free online via Skype. Meet online to read the book aloud, make notes, and discuss it as you go. Awesome.
Have fun! 🙂
